While there are plenty of famous Ohioans that served in the Union army or in the government during the Civil War, there were roughly 330,000 altogether. For every Grant and Sherman there were ten men like Philander Searles who served in the Ohio 174th Regiment or Abel Foster who served in the 139th Regiment. It is the ambitious goal of this site to provide an entry for each and every Ohioan that served in the war, including the military units they were enlisted in and the battles they fought in.
