During the Civil War in Ohio, political factions developed. One one side were the anti-war Peace Democrats, or Copperheads and secret organizations like the Order of American Knights. In Ohio, the Peace Democrats were led by Clement Vallandigham, and he was elected supreme commander of the Order of the American Knights in 1864.
