I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of notice of my appointment as Maj. General in the Army of the United States and my acceptance of the same.
Herewith please find the “Oath of Office,” required by law, duly signed and sworn to before Maj. T. S. Bowers, Judge Advocate for the “Army of the Tennessee.”
I was born at Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio on the 27th day of April 1822 and was consequently Forty-one years of age on the last 27th of April. I settled in Galena, Ill. In the year 1860 and regard that as my permanent home.
