About This Image
At the Battle of Sailor’s Creek on April 9, 1865 cavalry led by George Custer attacked the Confederate 4th Corps under the command of Major General Richard Anderson. The attack occurred around 2:00 in the afternoon, and Anderson’s men were pinned down near Marshall’s Crossroads, west of Sailor’s Creek. This action aided the Union victory, which would prove to be a catastrophic loss for the Confederacy. Three days later, Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
