Antebellum Period

The Antebellum Period refers to America prior to the Civil War, especially Southern culture.

Although there are no defined dates for the Antebellum Period, it essentially covers the time from the end of the American Revolution to the beginning of the Civil War. The term is used most often in romanticizing the culture of the South prior to the Civil War. It was during this time that deals were brokered and tensions grew between the slave states and the free states over slavery, state rights, and other issues. All of this simmered for many years until the election of Abraham Lincoln in November of 1860, which prompted South Carolina to secede the following month.
