From May 25, through July 4, 1863, the Union Army of the Tennessee, under the command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant, laid siege to the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. After more than forty days of food shortages, disease, and constant Union shelling, Confederate Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton surrendered the city and more than 29,000 soldiers of the Army of Mississippi to Grant on July 4, 1863.
