Ohioans also served in several other regiments from other states, most notably from Kentucky, West Virginia, and Massachusetts, as well as in federal units. Almost 330,000 Ohio men, including 5,092 African Americans, served in the Union military during the conflict.

Infantry regiments formed in Ohio became known as regiments of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The 109th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry began to be formed in the autumn of 1862. By late November 1862, officials had recruited only enough men to form a single company, with most regiments having ten companies. Due to the lack of men, officials ceased the formation of the 109th Regiment and transferred the volunteers to the 113th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. These men formed the basis of Company I of the 113th Regiment.
