In the American Civil War, Ohio provided the federal government with 260 regiments of men, including infantry, artillery, and cavalry units. Ohioans also served in several other regiments from other states, most notably from Kentucky, West Virginia, and Massachusetts, as well as in federal units. Almost 330,000 Ohio men, including 5,092 African Americans, served in the Union military during the conflict.
Infantry regiments formed in Ohio became known as regiments of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On March 10, 1865, the 192nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. Most enlistees came from the following Ohio counties: Allen, Huron, Hardin, Richland, Hancock, Van Wert, Highland, Hamilton, and Licking. The men in the regiment were to serve a one-year term of enlistment.
On March 12, 1865, authorities dispatched the 192nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry to Halltown, West Virginia, near Harper's Ferry. Here, the regiment became part of the Army of the Shenandoah. On March 31, 1865, the regiment moved to Charlestown, West Virginia, where it remained until April 3, when the men went on picket duty along the Shenandoah River, near Kabeltown, Virginia. On April 4, the regiment moved to Winchester, Virginia, arriving on April 5. Unfortunately for the regiment, the Civil War ended a few days later, and the soldiers of the 192nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry saw no real combat other than some light skirmishing while stationed at Halltown. During the regiment's service one man was killed in combat, while twenty-six others died from diseases or accidents. The regiment remained in Virginia, serving on garrison duty, near Reed's Hill, until August 25, 1865. The regiment then advanced to Winchester, Virginia, where it was mustered out of service on September 1, 1865. The 192nd Regiment then went to Columbus, Ohio, arriving on September 3, 1865. The regiment was disbanded three days later.
