In the American Civil War, Ohio provided the federal government with 260 regiments of men, including infantry, artillery, and cavalry units. Ohioans also served in several other regiments from other states, most notably from Kentucky, West Virginia, and Massachusetts, as well as in federal units.

Almost 330,000 Ohio men, including 5,092 African Americans, served in the Union military during the conflict.

Battalions formed in Ohio served for varying lengths of time, averaging one hundred days to three years. In 1864, the federal government also mustered into regular service some Ohio units for sixty days, including the 2nd Ohio Independent Battalion. This organization consisted of two cavalry companies, but the companies did not serve at the same time. The first company organized at Columbus, Ohio on August 16, 1864. This company mustered out of service on October 15, 1864. The second company formed on October 18, 1864 at Columbus, Ohio and mustered out of service on December 16, 1864. During their terms of service, both companies primarily performed guard duty in Columbus.
