The 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio on June 10, 1862. Including recruits from nearly all of Ohio's eighty-eight counties, this regiment was to serve for a period of three months.
Despite the regiment's short term of service, it did see military action in the American Civil War. On June 12, 1862, the 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry received orders to report to Baltimore, Maryland. The regiment arrived in Baltimore on June 15, 1862, and spent the next several weeks in a camp north of the city, receiving military training under Colonel Henry B. Banning, the 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry's commanding officer.
In late July 1862, the 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry reported for duty at Harper's Ferry, Virginia to defend this city from an anticipated Confederate attack. Stationed on Bolivar Heights, overlooking the city, Confederate forces under Thomas Jonathan Jackson captured Harper's Ferry and the 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in late August and early September 1862. Confederate officials paroled the Northern soldiers, and after a brief stay in Annapolis, Maryland, the 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry returned to Camp Chase in Columbus, where the regiment was mustered out of service between October 1 and 4, 1862, due to the termination of its three months of service.
