Abatis
A network of formidable obstacles consisting to trees and large limbs carefully arranged with the branches pointed outward to hinder enemy attacks.

Abolitionism
A movement for the abolition of slavery.

Abolitionist
A person who supported or actively demanded the prohibition of slavery.

Army
The largest of the “operational organizations” employed for combat by each side during the Civil War. The Union and the Confederacy each had multiple armies operating in different theaters of battle. The Federals usually named their armies after rivers in the area where they operated. The Confederates named their armies for states or regions in which they were active.

Artillery
Large-caliber weapons, such as cannon, that are operated by crews. There were two classes of Civil War artillery: smoothbore and rifled.
