On May 13, 1863, the U.S, War Department issued General Orders, No 121, naming Major General John M. Schofield as commander of the Department of the Missouri.

I. Major General J.M. Schofield is, by direction of the President, assigned to command of the Department of Missouri.
II. Major General S.R. Curtis, on being relieved from his command, will report by letter to the Adjutant General of the Army.
