General Orders, No. 337 (U.S. War Department)

Issued by the U.S. War Department on October 16, 1863, General Orders No. 337 created the Military Division of the Mississippi, which included the Departments of the Ohio, the Cumberland, and the Tennessee.

GENERAL ORDERS NO. 337

War Dep't, Adjutant General

Washington, October 16, 1863

  1. By direction of the President of the United States, the Department of the Ohio, of the Cumberland, and of the Tennessee, will constitute the Military Division of the Mississippi.
  2. Major General U.S. Grant U.S. Army, is placed in command of the Military Division of the Mississippi, headquarters in the field.
  3. Major General W.S. Rosecrans, U.S. Volunteers, is relieved from the command of the Department and Army of the Cumberland; Major General G.H. Thomas, is hereby assigned to that command.
