General Orders, No. 34 (U.S. War Department) (1864)

January 28, 1864

On January 28, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 34, naming Major General John M. Schofield to replace retiring Major General John G. Foster as commander of the Department of the Ohio. The order also assigned Major General George Stoneman to command of 23d Army Corps.

Washington, January 28, 1864

I.. Major General J. G. Foster is, at his own request, and on account of disability for service in the field arising from wounds, relieved from command of the Department of the Ohio.

II.. Major General J. M. Schofield is hereby assigned to the command of the Department of the Ohio.

III.. By direction of the President, Major General George Stoneman is assigned to the command of the 23d Army Corps.
