Issued by the U.S. War Department on August 15, 1861, General Orders Number 57 created the Department of the Cumberland.

The States of Kentucky and Tennessee will, in future, constitute a separate military command, to be known as the Department of the Cumberland, under the command of Brigadier-General Robert Anderson, U. S. Army.
