Letter from Benjamin F. Butler to U.S. Grant

June 17, 1864

On June 17, 1864, Major General Benjamin F. Butler wrote to Lieutenant General U.S. Grant agreeing to rescind his order to relieve Major General Quincy A. Gillmore of his command of the Tenth Army Corps.

Commanding Armies of the United States

General: I send you the withdrawal of so much of my special order as relieves Major-General Gillmore, according to your request, to take date as of the day of its issue, upon the supposition that it is to be operative and simultaneous with yours, relieving him at his request.
