On July 7, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued Special Orders, No. 230 relieving Major General Franz Sigel and Major General Julius Stahel from duty in the District of Harper's Ferry.

WAR DEPT., ADJT. GENERAL'S OFFICE,
Washington, July 7, 1864.
Brigadier General A. P. Howe is assigned to the command of the Military District of Harper's Ferry from the Monocacy to Hancock, subject to the orders of Major-General Hunter. Major-Generals Sigel and Stahel are relieved from duty in the District of Harper's Ferry, and will report in person at Cumberland, Md., to Major-General Hunter for orders.
